The Organic Teaching Kitchen in Croton: Eating to Beat the Heat

As the mercury levels rise, it’s easy to feel sluggish, low on energy and leave you dehydrated. According to the principals of Tradition Chinese Medicine, opposite elements, when balanced, promote harmony. Focusing your diet by eating seasonally cooling foods can combat those feelings and balance the summertime heat.

Summer’s harvest is abundance with naturally cooling foods.  Leafy greens, fruits and vegetables are an effective (and delicious) way to lower your body’s core temperature. They perform double duty thanks to their high water content and essential nutrients and antioxidants. Luckily, these foods are delicious eaten raw or with minimal preparation to keep you out of the kitchen.

Keep your cool and enjoy the outdoors with these tips:

  1. Drink water, it’s the simplest way to hydrate and keep cool.
  2. Enjoy fresh coconut water; the electrolytes will keep you hydrated.
  3. Snack on ripe sweet fruits; avocado, berries, cherries, mangoes, peaches, plums and melons.
  4. Eat calm and cooling vegetables; cucumber, celery, snow peas, summer squash, and dark leafy greens.
  5. Season your food with cooling herbs; coriander, ginger, lemon balm, basil and mint.
  6. Eat your greens, they contain mostly water
  7. Drink smoothies made with vegetables and fruits
  8. Enjoy cold soups.
  9. Minimize greasy foods.
  10. Minimize spicy foods.

It’s no coincidence that the season’s harvest supplies us with the foods that are right for our bodies; it’s nature’s medicine for beating the heat and keeping you cool.

  • 1 celery stalk
  • ¼ cucumber
  • Large handful of fresh leafy greens
  • 1 orange or granny smith apple
  • ½ lemon, squeezed
  • ¼ inch piece fresh ginger
  • ½ tsp. chia (optional)
  • ice


  1. Place ingredients in high-speed blender
  2. Blend and enjoy
