Looking for a night of nostalgia with some of the most iconic songs from the 60s and 70s? Well, The Bikinis: A New Musical Beach Party, is your ticket to a fun lively walk down memory lane! So… HANG LOOSE, its FAR-OUT (did I use that right)!
The musical opens with The Bikinis reunion show, it is New Year’s Eve 1999 at their beloved Sandy Shores Mobile Home Beach Resort. The fate of Sandy Shores is in question and for one night only the four women revisit their heyday down at the Jersey Shore set to the music of their youth. We meet two sisters (Annie and Jodi), their cousin (Karla), and their best friend (Barbara) who made up the teenage “one-hit-wonder” 1960s girl group, The Bikinis. Can their friendship and Sandy Shores be saved?
The four actresses belt out over 30 hits with such classics as “It’s In His Kiss,” “Yellow Polka Dot Bikini,” “The Twist,” “Heat Wave,” “I’m Every Woman”, “I Will Survive,” “Enough” and “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”. Their energy is contagious, lighthearted, and uplifting!
We first get a glimpse of them as wide-eyed teenage girls in ACT I who believed in fun and endless opportunities, their one-hit-wonder “Beach, Blanket, Boards, & Balls” speaks perfectly to their essence of innocence and adventure. In ACT II we sense a shift in emotion, songs echo a heavier broader social awareness. The Bikinis recall defining moments from the 1970s and how it helped shape their future. “Simple Songs of Freedom” “Incense and Peppermints”, and “Time of the Season” speak to the changing times and the evolution of a girl group to four women who would forge their own paths alone.
The Bikinis at Westchester Broadway Theatre is rounded out by a talented set of musicians that keep up with the quick pace of this musical and The Bikinis range of vocal ability.
Sure to be a fan favorite!
